Location: Gillette, WY
WH Smith & Associates partnered with Dowl, Inc. in August 2016 to provide the topographic survey data for a landslide area adjacent to a remote BLM road west of Gillette, Wyoming. The area was targeted, surveyed and flown over the course of one day, providing an extremely detailed survey of the extremely rugged badland terrain in the area. Conventional survey methods would have been difficult and limited in detail due to the steepness of the terrain. Using UAS systems allowed us to collect over 109 million data points covering 65 acres—remotely—so that we could represent the area with a detail simply not available by any conventional method.
